Visit A Dentist For A Facelift- Without A Knife

Today, surgeons are not the only ones who can restore your beauty. Cosmetic dentists have enhanced their specialty in making you look younger and pretty just like you were before, and sometimes even better. Your bite and your smile will be improved. Thanks to the modern breakthroughs of dentistry called Dental Facelift. Facial reconstruction in a non-surgical method is possible.

What are the common facial deformities that make you look older?

Sagging skin and deformities of the mouth are the primary factors that makes you look older than you really are. As years are continually adding to your age, your dental structures lose some of the essential parts needed to keep that young and vibrant look. The teeth are either discolored or missing and there could be recession of the gums which displays root surfaces of the teeth. This can result in receding and/or drooping jaw line and cheeks, nose and lips. Even the plastic surgeon cannot restore your former facial features unless you go to a cosmetic dentist. They have the right dental equipment to perform the right dental procedures that fits to your need.

What is ADD?

TMJ or the temporomandibular joint disorder is the only known procedure to uplift the quality of the mouth and jaw portion for many years. This does not only improve your features but also your health. It was proven to eliminate migraines, neck pain and back pain.

Recently, another dental procedure was discovered by Dr. Nick Mohindra called ADD or Added Dimension Dentistry. ADD is a procedure that uses a plastic retainer called ADD Facial Rejuvenator. The purpose of this device is to lift the lower jaw and other facial muscles to a higher position resulting to a younger looking you. By wearing this for several months, the results will be manifested. This will adjust your sagging facial muscles to a permanently restored position.

The eyes, the cheeks and the entire face are lifted with this amazing device. The chin is in proper place. Usually, the dropping of the chin makes it too protruded and results to older looking face. With ADD, this will be repositioned. When the jaw is restored, the cheeks and the wrinkled skin follow. The result reveals a higher cheek bones and firmer skin around the cheek and neck. The skin definitely looks smoother than it was before.

Is ADD expensive?

Typically, ADD is not quite expensive. But, it can become very expensive if your mouth requires a lot of reconstruction such as teeth and gum rehabilitation. If your teeth are discolored, then you also need a whitening treatment. If you want to achieve a total look, porcelain veneers are used to give you that beautiful perfect smile. Also dental crowns are placed over your decayed teeth.

If you are worried about the cost, just keep in mind that the risks you will get from ADD procedure is not that risky as you can get from surgical facelift. With ADD, you do not need to go under the knife to be beautiful.

Maintaining beauty is easy with modern technology. Now, dentists are also capable of improving your beauty through new dental procedures. ADD is the answer for lifted chin and skin without having to use a knife.

Braces: Looking Good and Feeling Great

It's been proven that people are captivated by beautiful smiles, so it's understandable why you'd want to get dental braces for cosmetic reasons. But straight teeth don't just look better; they're healthier, too.

When teeth are properly aligned, they're easier to clean ... and when your teeth are clean and dental plaque-free, you're less likely to need a tooth filling or gum disease treatment. Wearing braces can also help prevent excessive wear of your teeth and help you chew better.

Today's braces have come a long way from the stereotypical "tin grins" of TV and movies. In addition to traditional metal braces for straightening teeth, there are now a variety of braces designed with your comfort and appearance in mind:

Clear Braces -- Porcelain dental braces feature tooth-colored brackets made from a glass-like composite material that appears translucent.

Gold Braces -- Gold braces are actually stainless steel braces overlaid in gold.

Lingual Braces -- Similar to traditional metal braces, lingual braces are placed behind the teeth so that they're virtually unnoticeable.

Mini Braces -- Mini braces are 30 percent smaller than their traditional metal counterparts but just as strong.

Removable Braces -- Removable braces are mouthguard-like devices made of clear plastic. Invisalign® dental aligners are the most common type of removable braces.

No matter which type of dental braces you choose, orthodontic treatment can bring about a major improvement in your appearance and your quality of life. In approximately 24 months — the typical active treatment time for traditional braces — most people are able to achieve the smile of their dreams.

Are dental braces right for you? Ask your dentist during your next dental checkup.

Handling Dental Anxiety: Why Is It So Difficult To Bring Myself To The Dentist?

Fear Of The Dentist
Dental anxiety could have started during childhood. There are a lot of factors that causes this psychological condition. Parents must train their kids to visit the dentist regularly so that they will develop the habit of going to dental appointments. Dental anxiety is one of the reasons why adults shun dentists.

Why do you fear going to the dentist?

When it comes to going to the dentist, some people will avoid it at all cost if they can. But of course, we all know that in order to have a healthy teeth and gums, we need to visit our dentist twice a year. So the best way to overcome this fear of the dentist is to first identify the reasons why you feel this way so that you can deal with your fears. Here are some reasons why adults have this fear of the dentist:

  • Stories of pain. Someone in your family might have told you how painful his experience was with a certain procedure. So in your brain, you will associate dentist with pain.
  • Fear of enclosed rooms. Some dental offices are not very spacious. Claustrophobia needs to be defeated. One of the ways to overcome this is meditation.
  • Smell. Dental offices may have a distinct smell of medicines and that may trigger fear in you. Ask your dentist if they can use an air freshener, probably the fruity ones. Or you can carry your favorite air scent to mask off the smell. Dental offices now are aware of this and have ways to cast this smell, some use air fresheners and some may use candles which will also have a calming effect.
  • Bad experience with a dentist. If you previously had a bad and painful experience with a dentist, do not go back to him. Look for a good dentist to take care of your needs. You can ask your friends and family for recommending you to someone they know who is an expert in handling fearful patients. You can also search on the internet to find the right dentist for you, by reading their reviews and checking to see what others say about them. When your dentist is gentle and caring and you can actually trust him or her, all of your anxiety will go away.
Before coming to the dental appointment

Let the office know about your fears over the phone. See how compassionate the staff are and what they think their doctor can do for you. You should get a sense of comfort from their responses to you.

Once you meet the dentist

You want to discuss your fears with the dentist as well.  Gauge his or her attitude and feel the compatibility between you. If you see a good sign that you will get along well, then this is the dentist that you have been looking for.

Anxiety in a dental office is not permanent. When you are an adult and you learn how to rationalize things, your fears should go away.  Scouting for a kind-hearted dentist that can handle your dental problems properly is one in a million. Do not let the opportunity pass by if you find this dentist. Trust is one of the most important factors in alleviating your dental fear and anxiety.

Flossing Can Promote Healthy Joints

Flossing does not only make your teeth healthy but your joints, too. Medical science has found bacteria, which are supposed to be exclusively in your mouth, in the synovial fluid of the joints. How did these bacteria find their way to the synovial fluid of the joints? This mysterious phenomenon puzzled the scientists.

The path to the fluid
Scientists who discovered the bacteria are curious to determine the route of transportation or passage. Synovial fluid is supposed to be a sterile environment.  They have traced the DNA first and found that these bacteria are the progeny of the bacteria from the gums. They travelled through the blood stream and landed in the joint fluid. This has been linked to rheumatic arthritis and osteoarthritis.
The synovial fluid dries up when you reach old age. The presence of bacteria increases the pain and can elevate the damage.

From the mouth to the heart and knees
It is a popular knowledge in dentistry that inflamed gums harbor plenty of bacteria. The bacteria is associated with the plaque causing bacteria in the valves of the heart which is known to be atherosclerosis. It is also the suspect for the inflammation of the heart. Scientists are considering that the same bacteria are causing all this damages in your body.

The bacteria from the gums can get anywhere in your body as long as it rides your blood stream. When they are toured, they can choose any organ to thrive. Your main duty is to keep off the bacteria from your blood stream by strengthening your first line of defense- Your mouth.

You have to choose healthy food that can stimulate salivary production to wash away the debris. You have to avoid sweets because bacteria feed on them and proliferate. The mouth is the gateway to paradise for these bacteria. That is why proper brushing and flossing is so important. Also visiting your dentist for that 6 month check up and cleaning is essential. This is the only way you can make sure you don't develop gum disease and hence have the risk of these bacteria to travel through your blood stream into other parts of the body that they are not suppose to be in and cause life threatening diseases like heart disease, diabetes and other disease like arthritis.

Are You Waking Up With A Headache In The Mornings?

Headaches and TMJ
Did you ever wonder why you wake up with a headache? Do you just say to yourself that "maybe I didn't sleep good" or "maybe it's all the stress I am under", or "maybe I am coming down with a cold"? Well, it can be any of those, but if it's happening often, then it can also be your TMJ, or Temporomandibular joint disorder. This is a jaw condition where both of your top and lower jaws are not aligned appropriately. This creates stress on the joints of your jaw that placed a lot pressure on the muscles and nerves around this area. This is normally the cause behind the migraine headaches, the early morning headaches or the ache you feel in your neck or shoulders. That is why if you are having these symptoms, it is best to explore your dental practitioner for examination.

The TMJ disorder can cause several dental problems as well.

Be Careful With Toothpicks

Most dentists agree that toothpicks should be used sparingly as a method of teeth cleaning and should never be considered a substitute for brushing teeth and flossing. Fact is they should be used only when a toothbrush or floss is not available, for example, when you are in a restaurant and have food trapped between teeth.

Toothpicks that are used overzealously can damage tooth enamel, lacerate gums, and even cause a broken tooth in severe cases. People who have bonding or veneers can chip or break them if they aren't careful. Overly aggressive use of toothpicks can severely wear the roots of teeth, especially in cases where gums have pulled away from the teeth and leave teeth with root surfaces exposed, notably in the elderly.

Toothpicks date back to 3,500 BC when the earliest known oral hygiene kit featuring a toothbrush was found at the Ningal Temple in Ur. In China, a curved pendant, made of cast bronze was worn around the neck and used as a toothpick. In 536 BC, the Chinese mandated a law that required the use of the toothpick because their armies suffered from bad breath. In the Old Testament, it is written that "one may take a splinter from the wood lying near him to clean his teeth."

Today, most toothpicks in the United States come from "toothpick trees" in Maine. The tree is a white birch which has its trunk cut into thin sheets that are cut again to the thickness and length of toothpicks.

Dentists can tell when they have a habitual toothpick user in their dental chair. There are the tell-tale signs of toothpick marks. So use them if you have too, but don't make it a habit. Brush and floss instead.

What Effect Does Gastric Reflux Have On Your Teeth?

GERD: Danger From Within

GERD or Gastroesopgaeal Reflux Disease is the rising of acid from your stomach up to the esophagus and sometime into your mouth. This is characterized by burning sensation on the chest (heart burn) and sour taste or taste of vomit in the mouth. Dentists found its detrimental effect on the enamel of your teeth. So, you have to prevent or cure GERD to make your digestive system healthy from mouth down to the exit of waste.

Causes of GERD

First, you have to identify the top causes of GERD to prevent it. And, if you already have it, you can avoid these things to heighten its occurrence. Here are the things that contribute to GERD:
  • Pregnancy. When the baby is growing inside you, it can add pressure to your stomach which forces the sphincter to open and reflux acid.
  • Over eating. When the food cannot fit in your stomach, it comes back up to your mouth. You may vomit from it to reduce the amount or your body will induce reflux. Never over eat.
  • Peptic ulcer. This disease causes low amount of essential digestive enzymes that are needed for digestion.
  • Smoking. A smoker’s saliva is low in bicarbonate which neutralizes the acid in the stomach. This is one of the prime reasons why you have to stop smoking.
  • Alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic drinks increase vomiting and GERD.
Effects of GERD on your teeth

GERD can erode teeth. Dentists have seen that children with eating disorders like bulimia have thin teeth which are very brittle. It affects all the teeth in your mouth because the acid can attack everything, but it effects the front teeth more. The gums are also affected.

Diet inclusions that can reduce acid reflux
  • Oatmeal. If you eat this for breakfast, it is proven to decrease reflux. It is because, the oats is not too heavy for the stomach to digest and it has a lot of fiber. So, even if you indulge on this and sprinkle a little raisin, your stomach is still safe.
  • Ginger. It has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory property. It can also cure digestive problems and prevent vomiting.
  • Aloe Vera. This plant is not just for the hair and skin. It is also one of the agents that effectively shun reflux. The thick sap can cover and prevent stomach ulceration and retain the digestive enzymes in your stomach.
  • Fennel. This is a crunchy vegetable that is great for making salad. This is observed by foodies to lessen gastric reflux.
  • Sautéed, grilled or baked fish is a important dish for acid reflux prevention. Just keep in mind never to fry it or it will have a reverse result.
GERD is a condition where the acid reflux into the esophagus will cause ulcers, which in turn can be precancerous and if severe enough, it can also become cancerous. Your dental health will suffer also. It can make your teeth brittle which can lead to several dental issues and very expensive to treat. Prevention is the key to healthy teeth. Eat the food that can reduce GERD and stay healthy.
